What is Logging?

LOGGING

  • Logging is typing out what someone you interviewed says word for word. This is 2020 -- use your voice text and notes app -- I did so in 2014 the last time I was reporting for ABC 57. It saves time -- just go in a back room and repeat what the interviewee says directly into your phone like a robot.
  • Each potential soundbite you log needs to be written out like a normal sentence, but you need to include quotations at the beginning of their potential soundbite and at the end.
  • Logging is something news reporters (MMJ’s) who work in the news and sports departments due everyday while on assignments.
  • Your log cannot contain any spelling errors.
  • Your log must include correct punctuation.
  • Your log can’t include abbreviations.
  • TV stations need it for closed captioning for people who are watching who have hearing disabilities and now stations and even schools like ours need the log for our Youtube or online video content.
  • People with disabilities could sue a TV station, or even a school (and they have) stating the station/school corporation discriminated against them because they excluded ADA required text for people with disabilities.
  • All potential SOTs (Soundbites) you are logging need to have the length of the SOT typed behind them in red Ex. 9 seconds

For our PTV and corporation needs you will need to log all text in the following:

FONT: Sans Serif or Arial

SIZE: 12

COLOR: Black

"Regular sentence case like this."

All people’s names and titles that you interviewed need to be in the following:

FONT: Sans Serif or Arial

SIZE: 12

COLOR: Red

IN ALL CAPS LIKE THIS

EXAMPLE:

JONA CARTWRIGHT, B.S.N., R.N.

CARTWRIGHT “The top student in each one of those categories then is able to move on to the national competition.” 7 seconds

CARTWRIGHT ”And it’s also a great program for them to figure out if medicine is something they would like to do or not.” 0:07 - 0:15 seconds

CARTWRIGHT “Currently health career students are making and selling chocolate covered pretzels.” :15

CARTWRIGHT “So they are doing dark chocolate and white chocolate with a drizzle over the top“ 0:20-0:25 seconds

CARTWRIGHT: “And they’re selling them for 10 pretzels for seven dollars and 20 for twelve dollars.” 0:26-0:31 seconds

CARTWRIGHT “And it is going toward offsetting the cost of going to conference in April.Which would be about 300 dollars per student” 0:31-0:37 seconds
